Chief of Staff
Why this is a great job
Shipping is one of those industries that you don’t think about, until it stops working (see 2021 for some real-world examples). If you want to work in a “high-visibility” role and use your EQ to scale a company through Series B and beyond, this could be a great role for you.

About Nautilus.
Nautilus is building artificial intelligence to advance the efficiency of ocean commerce. We deliver technology to help shipping companies minimize fuel consumption, maximize operational efficiency, and optimize fleet performance. By arming ship owners and operators with real-time predictive decision support, Nautilus is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making global trade sustainable.
Ocean shipping consumes over $100 billion dollars of fuel every year, and up to 30% of it can be saved. For owner-operators, reliance on manually collected and analyzed data makes it difficult to optimize fleet performance in real-time. By providing a unified data platform that leverages machine learning, Nautilus helps its clients make better decisions to maximize the return on each ship and every voyage. For our clients, this means they drive closer collaboration, greater transparency, and stronger accountability across their global teams every day.
About You.
You are motivated by the mission and collaborative by nature. As Chief of Staff, you have some of the most cross-functionally dependent responsibilities in the organization and that type of work comes naturally to you. You’ll partner closely with key internal and external stakeholders and ensure alignment across the business while also owning key special projects, spearheading strategic initiatives and leading key operational processes. You execute with strong attention to detail and step in where you’re needed to lend support or lead a new initiative. You see yourself as a collaborative business partner, using your expertise to enable the entire organization to achieve its goals rapidly, but responsibly, using data/financial analysis and strategic thinking to guide decisions. That said, deep experience in a particular space will be valuable but you’ll also be stretched to operate outside of any single department. Most importantly, you recognize that, as a fast-growing early-stage startup, we need well-rounded team players who can easily navigate between the strategic and the tactical, and that excites you.
The Chief of Staff role, reporting directly to our CEO, is extremely high-visibility, with the opportunity and mandate to make a large impact across the entire organization. You will need to have a High EQ (low Ego!) and the ability to act professionally with thoughtfulness, inclusivity, directness and empathy. You need to help teams deliver their best work and accomplish their goals without relying on org-structure authority. You'll influence through ideas, facts, and data!
Outcomes For The Role.
Lead quarterly and annual objective setting and results tracking, inclusive of determining best frameworks and improvements to our OKR process and beyond.
Drive financial planning and reporting activities (both internally and externally), including working with leadership to establish key business metrics.
Provide decision support and strategic analysis through data-driven exploration.
Identify opportunities for operational and process improvement cross-functionally, prioritizing where greatest impact for the business will be felt.
Support People-first initiatives, such as executive hiring cycles and culture/engagement activities.
Effectively organize and align management team meetings, strategic offsites, board prep and board meetings.
Proficiencies.
6 to 8 years of professional experience - consulting, Investment Banking, MBA or previous Chief of Staff experience preferred.
Strong financial analysis skills, including being detail-oriented and proficient in building and using complicated data sources, financial modeling, and multi-year projections - excellent business acumen and understanding of a P&L!
Track record of success in delivering high-quality work in a high-growth, SaaS business environment (Series B or later).
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
Comfortable with ambiguity and biased towards action, with an open ear to perspectives counter to your own.
Strong verbal and written communication skills - this seems like a given but is especially important as we grow a global and hybrid workforce!
Management experience, as we support our team and their family lives, our Chief of Staff may on occasion step in to manage a team while another is on leave!
Low Ego and High TIDE! (Thoughtful, Inclusive, Direct & Empathetic!)
Our Core Values.
Get ready to join a group of diverse, smart, talented, and driven individuals. We are looking for people who are motivated by environmentalism and a future where shipping is sustainable and safe. A team member joining Nautilus is...

We’re DIRECT and we ask the tough questions.
We EMPATHIZE with humanity.
