Riches in niches
Note from Tom: Before we start, I just want to say that I believe that black lives matter. I condemn the systematic racism that has led to the death of George Floyd and countless others. I still have much to do in terms of educating myself and supporting my friends, colleagues, and communities, and I’m committed to doing that. Things aren’t going to change by just talking about it though - I wholeheartedly plan to do more around minority entrepreneurship in the future, including posting more roles from startups run by black founders and interviews with those founders on onejob. If you’re interested in participating, just reply to this email.
For now, take care of yourselves and those around you, and do whatever you can to fight racism.

A sneak peek at onejob health
In this week’s issue of onejob health ($5/month or *free* with a onejob premium subscription), we interviewed the founder of Uno Health, a startup (funded by Floodgate and Cowboy Ventures) that helps Medicare members get better care and save money. Below is an abbreviated version of the interview.
Plus, if you know any great backend engineers that want to have a big impact, send them this role.
Anna de Paula Hanika, CEO / Co-Founder of Uno Health
onejob health: How did you decide to start Uno Health and what are your plans for the next year?
Anna: I was inspired by first-hand experience at a Medicare insurance start-up, Clover Health, where I was running programs designed to improve health outcomes and reduce medical expenses for the 5-10% of our members driving 50% of expenses. I saw how often it was actually a non-clinical issue -- lack of food, safe housing, inability to pay for prescriptions -- that was driving those costs, and how often enrolling our seniors in a combination of low-income government programs (e.g, Medicaid, food stamps, utility assistance) that was our first and most powerful solution. 30% of seniors are eligible but not enrolled in state and federal programs that can unlock over $5000 per year for them -- leaving billions on the table ever year that could be giving millions the chance to afford better health. You can learn more about some of the individuals we’ve helped in our blog post with Oscar.
Other than Uno Health, what are a couple of other digital health companies that you think are doing interesting work?
There’s some really great work happening in the opioid space, including Boulder, who are building telehealth medication-assistance treatment and solving for a massive access issue. Elektra Health is tackling menopause, a vastly underrepresented problem, and Dorsata and Oula are tackling the maternity space, another huge opportunity.
How has your company adapted to the COVID-19 crisis?
Our target population, low-income seniors, are being disproportionately impacted by the crisis -- already more likely to experience worse health outcomes than their peers, they lack the financial means to safely isolate. We quickly started screening our users for food insecurity and social isolation and have been excited to test out the new online SNAP pilot to support seniors place online grocery orders using their aliments stamps credit, and referring those isolated to virtual companions. You can learn more from this video we made.
