Chief of Staff
Why this is a great job
If you’re interested in emerging markets, agriculture, or want to take on strategic projects and work as part of an executive team at a growing company, this could be the role for you.
The nitty gritty
Reports to the CEO (former Bain/PE) of Yalelo Zambia, and works closely with the rest of the executive suite.
Responsibilities
Manage a data & analytics super-unit of 5 (that I've recently hired, trained, and onboarded) to build-out and manage diagnostic and analytic dashboards (think PowerBI and Tableau), and support executive decision-making with ad-hoc analyses
Design, resource, and implement key strategic initiatives across the business: some of the ones I've gotten to work on include investigating stock loss and reducing theft along a complex value chain, bringing new products to market, and re-designing our GTM approach given localized purchasing patterns
Support internal decision-making through liaising between the executive team and key management verticals throughout the organization
Requirements: 2 - 3 years of experience in management consulting (desirable: interest or background in working in emerging market startup scene)
Insight from the current CoS
I have been working in this position for about half a year (and would continue if not for the limits of my externship contract from Bain), and it has thus far been the most formative experience of my professional career. At Yalelo, I've gotten to make decisions at a C-suite level that make the CoS position more of an executive at-large, and working to build a leadership team and culture from the ground up has been incredibly rewarding. It might seem weird that, just in the past year, three ex-Bain consultants have come through to work on this fish farm, but it's because each of us has found it to be such a fulfilling opportunity.
Location: Lusaka, Zambia, with possibility of 10 - 30% travel to regional operations (Uganda, Kenya, South Africa)
