They see me rollin'
Caper ($13M in funding from First Round, Lux, and YC) is hiring for a Chief of Staff - scroll down for the instructions on how to apply. But first, here’s an exclusive interview with the Co-Founder and CEO, Lindon Gao.
Lindon Gao, Co-Founder and CEO
onejob: How does the world look different if (when) Caper is wildly successful?
Caper builds smart shopping carts - powered by deep learning and computer vision - to enable a seamless grab-and-go retail experience. We differ from other emerging cashierless technologies like Amazon Go because we are the scalable solution. Caper’s autonomous checkout technology is plug and play, meaning it requires no in-store renovation, no operational overhaul, no heavy computations or endless image labeling. Any retailers can buy the carts and their entire store is upgraded with cashierless capabilities. While e-commerce accounts for 8% of total retail spending, Caper is innovating the other 92% of the untapped offline retail potential.
When Caper is wildly successful, Caper will dominate retail and can be seen in any physical retail settings such as supermarkets, convenience stores, drug stores, beauty stores, book stores and etc. Caper can also move online to e-commerce by turning physical stores into distribution centers.
onejob: Why hire a CoS now?
Caper is getting bigger, and we need someone to facilitate organizational alignment, execution and follow through of top initiatives. CoS will wear many hats across business, finance, product and project, and build a bridge across all functional departments in the company. CoS will also be working directly with me, and I’m willing to spend the time and teach him/her. CoS basically takes over a lot of my existing execution duties, and I want to free myself up to focus more on general directional planning.
onejob: What are the most important initiatives that you're working on right now?
Pirate to navy (transforming the company from a scrappy startup to an organized company)
Scaling the product
Putting structure and processes in place
Data analysis
onejob: What qualities do you particularly value in people that work with you?
Humble
Hungry
Hardworking
Ownership
onejob: Who is your role model/someone you look up to?
Marcus Aurelius. I’m big on Stoicism.
