Why this is a great job
Now, I know this isn’t your typical VC-backed-startup job, but Yalelo is growing like a startup and has a ton of interesting challenges to tackle (see below for examples). This role could be a great way to get some time-boxed exposure to working on a continent that’s going to be increasingly important over the next few years. I’ve also heard from 5 ex-Bain and 1 ex-McKinsey person that they loved working there and learned a ton.

Location: Lusaka, Zambia
Yalelo is a fish company co-founded by former consultants that seeks to increase access to affordable, healthy, sustainably sourced protein in sub-Saharan Africa. We currently employ ~800 people and conduct retail operations across Zambia, with imminent plans to expand into neighboring export markets (Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, etc.)
Report to and support initiatives by the Commercial Director; specific projects variable according to Commercial Division needs, but past work has included:
Design, resource, and implement key strategic initiatives across the business, including: Investigating stock loss and reducing theft along a complex value chain, Bringing new products to market, Re-designing GTM approach given localized purchasing patterns, Optimizing product/channel mix, delivery routes, etc.
Support internal decision-making through liaising between the executive team and key management verticals throughout the organization
Participate in high-level strategic planning for coming year / next three years
Coordinate investor materials preparation, support executive alignment and help coach and schedule during investor due diligence visits through FirstWave capital raise (ongoing, through Q1 2020)
Perform analysis of outlet P&L, unit economics, price elasticity, impact of marketing initiatives, etc.
Support executive decision-making with other ad-hoc analyses
Qualifications
2 - 3 years of experience in management consulting (desirable: interest or background in working in emerging market startup scene)
